Two New Beam and Block Robust Details
RDL Handbook now contains 23 robust details for sound proofing new homes...
Robust Details Limited (RDL) is pleased to announce the launch of two new Robust Details, available for immediate use to house builders across England and Wales.
This latest update to the Robust Details Handbook means that for the first time the Robust Details Scheme covers beam and block floors, making Robust Details an even more attractive proposition for builders and architects of small to medium-sized developments.
The new details are E-FC-6 - beam and block with concrete topping Regupol E48 system and floating screed, and E-FC-7 - beam and block with concrete topping and floating floor treatment. The Regupol E48 system makes E-FC-6 a proprietary Robust Detail, as this is the only resilient layer system which may be adopted. E-FC-7 is a generic Robust Detail.
The Regupol E48 material is manufactured by BSW UK and sold through its business partner, CMS Acoustic Solutions. Jamie Symons, BSW UK Limited managing director says: "Beam and block floors have shorter lead times than pre-cast, and are much less labour intensive. By delivering a Robust Detail approved system with Regupol E48, we're giving those developers who favour the Robust Detail route the option to use the floor construction they want, and the confidence that it will be Part E compliant.
Dave Baker, chief executive of RDL, says; "These latest Robust Details provide the house building industry with a new option for separating floor constructions, not previously covered by the Robust Details Scheme, and makes Robust Details an even more attractive proposition for developers across England and Wales. We expect the beam and block floor patterns to prove to be particularly useful on small developments or tight sites. As such they may be of particular interest to small and medium sized builders.
The Robust Details Scheme has been established as an alternative to pre-completion testing (PCT), to ensure that all new homes built using Robust Details meet and exceed the current Part E Building Regulations.
The updated Robust Details Handbook 'Robust Details Part E - Resistance to the Passage of Sound', now contains 23 Robust Details. It also includes new options on some of the original robust details, which have been added after feedback from the house building industry and field testing of new properties since the handbook was printed.
RDL expects to publish more Robust Details later in the year, providing house builders and technical directors with more options on separating structures for the future.

RDL is an independent company established to implement the new 'Robust Detail' alternative to mandatory pre-completion sound testing for new homes, under the provisions of the Building Regulations. It is the only organisation able to approve and manage the use of Robust Details for Part E of the Building Regulations (in England and Wales).
By monitoring the performance of Robust Details, RDL helps the industry to improve the sound-insulation performance of separating walls and floors in new homes. Home buyers can therefore be confident that their new homes will have better sound insulation than legally required, and house builders can avoid expensive pre completion testing and any uncertainty and costs involved in rectifying new dwellings which fail sound-proofing tests.
