RD Approval

New Proposals

Trade associations, manufacturers or other interested parties can put forward products and designs for assessment and possible inclusion within the Robust Details Handbook. These Candidate Robust Details (CRDs) can be in the form of a complete separating element including its associated flanking constructions; or amendments / additions to existing published robust details.

In all cases, we recommend that contact is made with us to discuss applications and the CRD process, as the requirements can vary depending on the context of the proposal. The Applicant Pack Applicant Pack contains a full reference, but as an overview, there is a three-stage approval process with a fee payable at each stage:

Stage A

An initial quantity of 8 tests conducted on representative structures in real developments is submitted along with drawings and a full specification for the proposed CRD (other documents are required). The submission is assessed for the acoustic performance, and to judge that the design is satisfactorily robust.

Stage B

The remaining quantity of tests (depending on type of application) is submitted with supporting documentation for assessment. If this is successful, the design is approved as a robust detail and is forwarded for inclusion in the Green Guide. Also EcoHomes, and where applicable, Code for Sustainable Homes credits are allocated.

Stage C

Where new or amended artwork is appropriate, it is created in consultation with the proposer and is published in the subsequent update pack. It is then available for use by developers as an alternative to pre-completion testing to demonstrate compliance with Requirement E1 of the Building Regulations (England and Wales); and to gain credits under EcoHomes and the Code for Sustainable Homes (where applicable).
