Performance

The Robust Details scheme offers builders an alternative to sample pre-completion sound testing (PCT) to demonstrate compliance with Requirement E1 of the Building Regulations for new build houses and flats. The RD scheme is based upon separating wall and floor specifications, which have been proven by repeated testing, to consistently improve upon the minimum acoustic standards listed under Requirement E1 of the Building Regulations.

For new build dwellings, the minimum Building Regulations requirements in this respect are:

  • Airborne sound (floors & walls) = 45dB DnT,w+Ctr (min)
  • Impact sound (floors only) = 62dB L'nT,w (max)

All of the published robust details have undergone an extensive sound insulation assessment and testing regime, during which the average performance must be at least 5dB better than the standards indicated in Approved Document E. It is a further requirement that no single test result can offer less than a 2dB improvement.

We then continue to monitor the Robust Details by sampling plots registered with us in respect of the construction and performance of the separating walls and floors. We employ specialist acoustic consultants nationwide to undertake this monitoring and reporting on our behalf.
